New Shareholder Value: The risks and rewards of sustainability
25 September 2008 Canary Wharf, London |
The emergence of climate change as a mainstream political issue has served to further emphasise the breadth of ethical issues today's business leaders must now manage. Energy, the environment and ethics (the 3Es) and their implications are now so far reaching that business can no longer afford to ignore them. But at what price or for what reward?
Since January 2004 the 300 companies in the HSBC Global Climate Change Index have produced nearly twice the profits or returns of other stocks as measured by the MSCI World Index2 (Jan 04 to Sept 07) in a clear sign of the growing demand from investors for securities that address global warming issues in their business models.
In contrast whilst 53% of firms worldwide surveyed by the Economist Intelligence Unit in February 2008 claim to have a sustainability policy, less than one in three executives (29%) say their company has a coherent strategy that covers the whole business and its supply chain.
